Bathroom Remodel Planning Guide

A bathroom remodel requires more decisions per square foot than almost any other project in your home. Here's how to approach the planning process thoughtfully.

Define the Scope First

Bathroom projects range from cosmetic refreshes (new fixtures, paint, vanity) to full gut renovations (new plumbing, layout changes, custom tile). Be clear about what you're trying to accomplish before the first contractor conversation.

  • Cosmetic refresh — no plumbing or structural changes
  • Mid-range remodel — new tile, fixtures, vanity, possible shower conversion
  • Full renovation — plumbing relocation, layout change, custom everything
  • Addition — new bathroom in a room or addition that didn't have one

Tile Selection

Tile is the most impactful decision in a bathroom remodel. Consider:

  • Floor tile — porcelain or ceramic, larger format tiles (12x24) make small baths feel larger
  • Shower walls — choose non-slip, waterproof tiles appropriate for wet areas
  • Grout color — lighter grout shows dirt; darker grout shows minerals from hard water
  • Pattern — straight lay is easiest and most affordable; herringbone, chevron, and brick offset add cost
  • Natural stone — beautiful but requires sealing and more maintenance

Shower and Tub Options

The shower is the centerpiece of most master bath renovations.

  • Walk-in shower — most popular upgrade, removes tub/shower combo, opens space
  • Freestanding soaking tub — dramatic focal point, most popular in master baths
  • Tub/shower combo — practical for a guest bath or home with young children
  • Curbless shower — barrier-free entry, excellent for aging-in-place, requires proper drain placement

Vanity and Storage

The vanity should provide storage appropriate to how many people use the bathroom. Double vanities are standard in master baths and dramatically reduce morning conflicts. Floating vanities make rooms feel larger and are easier to clean under.

Lighting Plan

Bathroom lighting is often an afterthought and shouldn't be. A complete lighting plan includes: task lighting at the vanity (side-mounted sconces are superior to a single overhead fixture for makeup/grooming), ambient overhead lighting, and accent lighting in niches or under floating vanities. Don't skip a heated floor — it's one of the highest-satisfaction upgrades in bathroom remodeling.
